What is Bowiemap?
Bowiemap is a map illustrating the connections between 30,000 music makers. Bowiemap focuses on the region around RVA (Richmond, VA), using a handful of newsworthy celebrities as points of reference.
What's the Bowiemap story?
We're a group of friends who are musicians by night--app developers, data scientists, and product designers by day. The night after David Bowie died, we hung out and listened to his new album. During his whole life he was surrounded by young creatives, which kept his creativity fresh. We realized that we've played on projects with some of those young people, and the more we talked about it, the more connections we found, and that's how Bowiemap was born.
Why does Bowiemap only feature people who have recently died?
After David Bowie died, we began developing Bowiemap--but shortly after, we lost George Martin, Keith Emerson, two members of Jefferson Airplane, and countless others. With each death, we found ourselves wanting to revisit their works, and reminisce on how their music fit into our lives. These people have been our starting points. As we grow, the map will feature other artists who similarly inspire us.
Will other cities be mapped?
Yes. If there's one you'd like us to work on, we're taking requests: use the Add/Correct link on the top menu, or email us.
I'm not from Richmond--why am I on the map?
Bowiemap was born in RVA--but since RVA musicians have connections outside the city, we've expanded naturally to include them too. That's the beauty of the map--it connects people across both time and space.
